Dr. Niharika Gill (nee Srivastava), presently Professor and Head, Department of Medicine at K.J. Somaiya Medical College, Mumbai, graduated from the T. N. Medical College and Nair Hospital in Mumbai in 1984 and completed her post graduation in General Medicine from the same institute in 1989 under Mumbai University. She was then attached to Hinduja Hospital at Mumbai for one year where she further specialized in Rheumatology under the able guidance of one of the most respected and senior physicians of Mumbai Dr. V.R. Joshi. From 1990 to 1996 she worked as Assistant Professor in Medicine with special interest in Rheumatology at the Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College Hospital at Sion, followed by a brief stint at the prestigious Hospital for Orthopedics, Sports Medicine, Arthritis and Trauma(HOSMAT) at Bangalore as a consultant in Rheumatology. In 1997 she joined K.J. Somaiya Medical College Hospital and Research Centre as an Associate Professor in Medicine where she is currently Professor and Head of the Department of Medicine and Rheumatology unit for the past 12 years. She is also a leading consultant Rheumatologist attached to Lilavati, Asian Heart and Gurunanak Hospitals at Bandra and Joy Hospital in Chembur.
Dr. Gill is a recognized under graduate and Post Graduate teacher with the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences and the National Board of Examinations, New Delhi and has been an examiner at various universities throughout the country both at undergraduate and post graduate level for many years. She has several publications in reputed national and international journals including being on the advisory board of the prestigious text book ‘Clinical Medicine’ as International Faculty from India. Her special research interest has been in the field of development and use of immunity modifying drugs in the treatment of rheumatic disease in which she has conducted several clinical trials.
As a Rheumatologist her predominant interest has been in spreading awareness regarding osteoporosis and arthritis which are often neglected especially amongst women and the elderly population in India. She has conducted such programs regularly on World Arthritis Day including a recent talk on ‘Developing a Healthier India’ regarding Vitamin D deficiency, in the electronic media . She is a well known speaker and panellist and has been chairperson in academic sessions at various state and national conferences for the Association of Physicians of India and Indian Rheumatology Association of which she is an active member. She is a respected teacher on osteoporosis awareness through the renowned International Osteoporosis Foundation at Geneva.
